Meet your School Counselor, Amber Herrera!

I am so excited to join River Oaks Elementary for the 2024-2025 school year! I am dedicated to supporting our student's academic, emotional, and social growth. Our mission is to create a safe and supportive environment where ALL students can thrive.

One of my greatest joys is working with kids. It’s incredibly rewarding to be a part of their growth and to make a positive impact on their lives. I’m here to support and guide you, and I can’t wait to work together to make this a great year!

Here are the counseling resources provided for your students:

Classroom Lessons

• Counseling lessons are taught throughout the school year in the child's classroom. The lessons cover topics such as personal safety, college & career, self-esteem, and coping skills. 

Small Group Lessons

• Small group support is provided to students based on parent and teacher feedback and through collaboration with the counselor. Students may benefit from small group lessons over coping skills, empathy, and classroom skills. 

Individual Support

• A student may need individualized support if they are displaying social, emotional, or academic needs. The goal of this support is to help students become successful in the classroom and in peer relationships. School counselors are not certified to provide on-going therapy but can help get them connected to other mental health supports outside of the school setting.

Parent & Teacher Collaboration

• Counselors may partner with parents and teachers to help establish a positive, welcoming learning environment for all students.

For the Love of Christi
This organization holds monthly support meetings and various activities for children and adults to help them adjust to life after the death of a loved one.

STARRY
This organization provides resources to children ages 7-17 and their families. Services provided include crisis intervention counseling, individual & family play therapy, as well as group therapy.
