River Oaks Elementary Celebrates Community at Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon

River Oaks Elementary recently hosted its annual Thanksgiving Luncheon, bringing together students, families, and staff for a celebration of community, gratitude, and tradition. The event offered a special opportunity for families to connect with one another and with the school, sharing meals, laughter, and memorable moments.

“Seeing so many families come together reminds us just how special our school community is,” said [Principal’s Name], Principal of River Oaks Elementary. “We are grateful for every family who joined us and helped make this event so meaningful.”

The luncheon highlighted the warmth and support that define River Oaks, reinforcing the strong sense of community that makes the school a welcoming place for all. As the season of Thanksgiving continues, River Oaks wishes all families a time filled with gratitude, joy, and togetherness.

Mother Goose Visits River Oaks Elementary!

We were so lucky to have internationally-known storyteller, puppeteer, and educator Margaret Clauder — better known to the kids as Mother Goose — visit our school recently for a special performance.

Ms. Clauder doesn’t just perform; she brings stories to life. During her “Reading and Rhyming with Mother Goose” show, children enjoyed classic nursery rhymes told through storytelling, delightful puppetry, and lively ventriloquism — complete with characters like Lamby, Goosey, and Itsy Bitsy.

With songs, props, and enthusiastic audience participation, the show engaged students from Pre-K through 2nd grade. We saw big smiles, bursts of laughter, and — best of all — a renewed excitement about reading and rhymes.

Our librarian, Emily Arbesu, shared her excitement about the visit: “Students loved Mother Goose's visit to River Oaks! Students really enjoyed her hilarious puppets, and were laughing and learning the entire visit!”

Ms. Clauder’s Mother Goose program supports early literacy by helping children make connections between rhyme, rhythm, and reading — all while having fun. Her storytelling, expressive characters, and audience participation encouraged students to engage joyfully with language and literature.

We are grateful for the creativity, energy, and magic Ms. Clauder brought to our campus. It was a memorable experience that reminded our Roadrunners just how fun reading can be!

River Oaks Elementary Celebrates Literacy at the 10th Annual sBOOKtacular!

River Oaks Elementary recently hosted its 10th Annual sBOOKtacular, a beloved tradition that celebrates the joy of reading and brings our school community together through creativity and fun.

Each year, sBOOKtacular transforms our campus into a celebration of books and imagination. Students and staff members parade through the halls dressed as their favorite book characters, sharing in the excitement of storytelling brought to life. The creativity doesn’t stop there—our Pumpkin Decorating Contest showcases pumpkins turned into beloved book characters, from classic favorites to new literary heroes.

One of the highlights of the event is our Book Giveaway, where every student chooses a book to take home and add to their personal library. This year’s giveaway was made possible thanks to generous donations from BookPeople and the friends and families of our staff.

The sBOOKtacular event is a River Oaks tradition that continues to grow each year, reminding us all that reading opens doors to endless adventures. It’s a celebration our students—and staff—look forward to year after year!

River Oaks Elementary Enrichment Groups Inspire Student Creativity and Curiosity

For nearly a decade, River Oaks Elementary has proudly offered Enrichment Groups—a long-standing tradition that gives every student the chance to explore new interests and talents during the school day. These experiences allow students to learn in creative, hands-on ways while connecting with teachers and classmates across the campus.

Each year, our Enrichment Groups bring excitement and variety to learning. Students might find themselves painting with watercolors, sculpting with clay, mastering yoga poses, or solving brain-teasing puzzles. Others dive into STEM challenges, coding with Scratch, or expressing themselves through writing, storytelling, and art. From Chess and Spelling Bee practice to Girls Who Code, Dance and Movement, and Passport to the World, there’s something for every curious mind to enjoy.

At River Oaks, we believe that when students are given the chance to explore their passions, they grow as thinkers, creators, and collaborators. The energy, laughter, and creativity that fill our classrooms during Enrichment Group time make it one of the most inspiring traditions at our school—a true celebration of learning beyond the textbook.

River Oaks Elementary Celebrates Grandparents Day Lunch

River Oaks Elementary was filled with smiles, hugs, and special memories during our annual Grandparents Day Lunch! A wonderful turnout of grandparents and family members joined our students for a heartwarming meal together.

This year, we celebrated under the theme “A Bushel of Love for Grandparents.” In keeping with the theme, we created an “Apple Tree of Love” in the hallway. Families were invited to write heartfelt messages to their students on paper apples and add them to the tree. By the end of the day, our tree was bursting with colorful apples and words of encouragement, making it a beautiful reminder of the love and support that surrounds our students.

We are beyond pleased with the overwhelming participation from our families. Thank you to all the grandparents and special guests who took time out of their day to join us and make this event so meaningful for our students. Events like these help strengthen the bond between home and school, and we are grateful to have such an involved and caring community.

River Oaks Elementary Continues Successful Attendance Incentive Program

River Oaks Elementary is proud to continue its attendance incentive program after a successful launch during the 2024–2025 school year. The program was originally designed to help ROES reach its attendance goal of 94% average daily attendance, and it quickly became a favorite among students and staff.

Students encouraged one another to attend school regularly in order to earn fun rewards such as extra recess, donuts for the class, a dance party, and even an opportunity to throw a pie in Assistant Principal Mr. Perez’s face. Thanks to these efforts, ROES saw real results: daily attendance improved and chronic absenteeism declined. By the end of the year, the school’s average daily attendance was 93.6%—an improvement of 1.4%.

Principal Jennifer Garza shared how the program has grown along with the enthusiasm of the students: “We started our attendance incentives with simple rewards like a donut party, a dance party, and extra recess. Over time, these have grown into special experiences like lunch with teachers in the garden, stuffy day, and extra time with River (our mascot). I believe this is important because it shows our students that being at school every day is worth celebrating, and it builds a culture where learning, joy, and community go hand in hand.”

This year, ROES has set its sights even higher with a goal of 95% daily attendance. The program continues with a menu of reward options for students to choose from. Each class selects one reward to work toward. Every day the class has perfect attendance, they earn a letter toward spelling the word RIVER. Once all the letters are earned, the class enjoys their reward—and then begins working toward the next one.

Special schoolwide challenges are also in place this year. If ROES reaches 95% attendance by December, Mr. Perez will be taped to the wall by ROES students. And if the school ends the year at 95% attendance, lucky students will once again have the chance to throw pies at him.

While the incentive program brings energy and excitement to the school day, its heart is about learning. Regular attendance is vital to student growth, and ROES deeply appreciates the efforts families make to ensure students are at school.

With momentum already building this fall, students are excited, engaged, and earning rewards. River Oaks Elementary is on track for another year of strong attendance and even stronger community spirit.

River Oaks Elementary Students Take Part in Connally High School Football Season Opener

Connally High School welcomed students and staff from River Oaks Elementary at the Cougars’ first home football game of the 2025 season. River Oaks students and teachers were given the special opportunity to run through the Connally players’ tunnel and take the field as part of the pregame festivities.

Following the opening, students enjoyed the first half of the game from designated on-field seating, giving them a front-row experience of the excitement and energy of Cougar football.

This partnership provided a memorable evening for River Oaks students while strengthening the connection between the elementary and high school communities. River Oaks is grateful to Connally High School for extending this opportunity and for creating a positive, school-spirited experience.

River Oaks Elementary Kicks Off the 2025–2026 School Year

River Oaks Elementary has officially started the 2025–2026 school year with excitement, energy, and community spirit. The year began with our annual Popsicles in the Park event, where teachers traveled into the community to welcome families and share a sweet treat as students prepared to return to school.

Following this tradition, families attended Meet the Teacher Night, a special opportunity for students and parents to drop off school supplies, explore classrooms, and connect with teachers and classmates before the first day.

Now that the year is underway, students are busy engaging in meaningful learning every day. From reading and writing to math, science, and social studies, River Oaks students are developing academic skills while also building important social skills that help them grow as learners and friends.

We look forward to a year filled with growth, learning, and success for every Roadrunner!

The NED Show Brings the Power of Resilience to ROES

This week, our students had the exciting opportunity to experience The NED Show: Resiliency Ride, an engaging performance that blends storytelling, humor, illusions, and jaw-dropping yo-yo tricks to teach powerful life lessons.

The show focuses on building a positive mindset and resiliency - helping students understand the importance of trying again after mistakes, supporting others, and always doing their best. The yo-yo, a highlight of the show, isn’t just for fun; it becomes a symbol of persistence and practice. As students learn to yo-yo, they also learn that growth comes through effort and patience.

Through the NED message—Never give up, Encourage others, and Do your best - students walked away inspired and empowered to face challenges with courage and a positive outlook.

We are grateful for programs like The NED Show that bring learning to life and help shape the hearts and minds of our students!

ROES 5th Graders Bring History to Life in Living Wax Museum

The ROES library recently underwent an incredible transformation into a Living Wax Museum, thanks to the hard work and creativity of our talented 5th grade students! After weeks of dedicated research, writing, and preparation, each student brought a prominent historical figure to life—complete with eye-catching displays and inspiring speeches.

As visitors walked through the museum, they were treated to a series of impressive presentations that highlighted not only students’ deep understanding of their chosen figures, but also their growth in public speaking and research skills. From courageous leaders to groundbreaking innovators, history truly came alive through the voices and performances of our young historians.

We are so proud of our 5th graders for their effort, enthusiasm, and outstanding presentations. Great job, 5th grade—you made history come alive at ROES!

ROES Scholastic Book Fair: A Celebration of Reading and Community

Twice a year, the ROES library transforms into a vibrant hub of excitement, imagination, and learning—thanks to the Scholastic Book Fair, hosted by our dedicated librarian, Ms. Arbesu. This cherished event not only brings books into the hands of eager young readers but also fosters a love of literature that lasts a lifetime.

A Huge Thank You for a Beary Cute Spring Book Fair!

Our 2025 Spring Book Fair was a roaring success! With an impressive $8,587.19 in total sales, we continue to see incredible support from our students, parents, and staff. Comparing this with past sales—$6,430.25 in Spring 2024 and $8,583.78 in Fall 2024—it’s clear that our school community values the importance of books and literacy.

Even more exciting, 22% of these sales come back to our school as a cash profit, directly benefiting our students and library. These funds allow us to purchase new books, resources, and materials that enhance the learning experience for everyone at ROES.

Why Is the Book Fair So Important?

The Scholastic Book Fair is more than just a chance to buy books—it’s an opportunity to ignite a passion for reading. It brings families together, encourages student independence, and adds a nostalgic touch for parents and grandparents who fondly remember their own childhood book fair experiences.

Exciting Reads for Every Student

One of the highlights of the book fair is discovering what books our students are most excited about. Graphic novels continue to be a huge hit, with Dog Man leading the pack as the most popular series. In addition to books, the fair also features journals, diaries, and fun stationery items—perfect for inspiring young writers!

Supporting Our Library and Literacy Programs

Thanks to the success of our book fairs, we’ve been able to fund a variety of special events and improvements. Profits from past fairs helped us create a cozy reading nook filled with comfy bean bags, host an unforgettable visit from Mother Goose for our PK-2 students, and bring in local author Anne Wynter to inspire our 2nd-5th graders. These moments create lasting memories and deepen students’ connection to the joy of reading.

Looking Ahead: What’s Next?

One of the most heartwarming aspects of the book fair is watching students shop for books—many for the very first time on their own. It’s always touching to see them pick out gifts for their siblings or parents, reinforcing the joy of sharing stories. This year, we were especially excited to bring to life our first-ever student-suggested theme—Bears! Beary Cute! Beary Cool! The enthusiasm from our students made this fair extra special.

As we look forward to future book fairs, we remain grateful for the unwavering support of our ROES community. Thank you for helping us foster a love of reading—one book at a time!

First Graders Explore Life Cycles Through Egg Hatching Experiment

This spring, our first-grade students took their learning to a whole new level with an exciting hands-on science project: hatching chicken eggs right in their classrooms!

As part of their unit on life cycles, students dove deep into the study of how animals grow and change. Through reading books, watching educational videos, and participating in classroom discussions, they gained a solid understanding of the stages of a chicken’s development.

The most thrilling part of the project was the daily observations. Each day, students recorded changes they noticed in the eggs and eagerly awaited the big moment. Their patience and curiosity paid off when they got to witness the incredible experience of chicks hatching before their very eyes!

This project brought science to life in the most memorable way. Not only did students learn valuable lessons about biology and responsibility, but they also developed a deeper appreciation for the natural world. It was a truly egg-citing time for everyone involved!

ROES Celebrates the Dedication of Our PTO

At River Oaks Elementary, we are incredibly grateful for our hardworking and dedicated Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO). Their commitment to our students and staff has helped create meaningful experiences that enrich our school community.

Lana Davis, our PTO President, has been instrumental in revitalizing the organization over the past three years. After the challenges of COVID-19, she took the lead in rebuilding the PTO, fostering greater parent involvement, and increasing opportunities for student engagement. Thanks to these efforts, the PTO has been able to fund enriching educational experiences, including bringing in environmental science organizations and hosting events during ROES book fairs that support our library’s ability to invite guest authors.

The impact of the PTO extends beyond financial contributions—it creates a strong sense of community. As Lana Davis shared, being part of the PTO has allowed her to see firsthand the dedication of our teachers, staff, and administrators, reinforcing just how much every role contributes to making River Oaks a wonderful place for students to learn and grow.

We encourage more parents and community members to get involved. Monthly PTO meetings and email updates provide opportunities to stay connected and make a difference. Whether through volunteering, sharing ideas, or supporting events, every contribution helps create engaging learning experiences for our students.

ROES is proud to partner with such a passionate and committed PTO. We look forward to continuing this wonderful collaboration to support our students and staff in every way possible!

ROES Field Day: A Celebration of Fitness, Fun, and Friendly Competition

Every year, ROES hosts its much-anticipated Field Day, a school-wide event where students put their physical skills to the test in a day full of exciting activities. Organized by Coach McNeil, ROES' dedicated PE coach, Field Day allows students to showcase the fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship skills they've developed throughout the year.

Students participate in a variety of activities that challenge their speed, agility, coordination, and teamwork—such as relay races, tug-of-war, obstacle courses, and jumping competitions. These events not only encourage healthy competition but also teach students important life skills like perseverance, cooperation, and resilience.

A true community effort, Field Day wouldn’t be possible without the incredible parent volunteers, who help make the event a huge success each year. The celebration extends beyond athletics, too! Ms. Shotlow, ROES' art teacher, leads students in creating a special Field Day mural, while Mr. Kephart, our music teacher, gets students moving with music-based activities.

With so much energy, creativity, and teamwork, Field Day is a highlight of the school year. It’s a day that students look forward to, filled with laughter, learning, and memories that last long after the final race is run.  ROES 2024-2025 Field Day will be held on Friday, March 14th.  If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please contact Coach McNeil.

Ms. Burleigh’s Class Celebrates 10 Years of Snack Cart Fun!

For the past ten years, Ms. Burleigh’s class has been spreading joy throughout ROES with their monthly Snack Cart—a special tradition that has become a favorite among students and staff alike!

Inspired by other special needs programs that used coffee carts to teach life skills, Ms. Burleigh and her dedicated educational assistants decided to create a snack cart instead, making it a safer and more elementary-friendly option. Since then, the Snack Cart has become a highly anticipated event every month.

Students eagerly take on various roles, from stacking the cart to delivering snacks and even sharing much-loved memes with teachers. Through this experience, they practice patience, turn-taking, greetings, and social skills, all while having a great time. The excitement is contagious—some students light up the moment they see the carts rolling down the hall!

Teachers across all grade levels are incredibly receptive, often telling the students that Snack Cart Day is their favorite day of the month! The interactions between staff and students have fostered a sense of community, making this tradition a meaningful part of the school culture. After all, who doesn’t love a surprise snack?

The biggest challenge? Making sure every student gets a turn at different jobs! While some students may want to do the same task each time, the goal is to provide everyone with the opportunity to learn and grow.

Congratulations to Ms. Burleigh’s class on 10 years of the Snack Cart—here’s to many more years of learning, laughter, and snacks!

ROES Community Lights Up the Night with Annual Luminary Event

The spirit of the season shone brightly on Friday, December 13th, as the ROES community gathered for the Annual Luminary Event. Families, friends, and staff came together for an evening filled with music, creativity, and holiday cheer.

The night began with a delightful musical performance by the talented 4th and 5th-grade students, whose songs captured the magic of the holidays. Santa Claus made a special appearance, greeting children and posing for festive photos. In the library, students and parents channeled their creativity into crafting beautiful holiday ornaments, adding a personal touch to the season’s celebrations.

Attendees also had the chance to shop for concessions and ROES merchandise, with proceeds supporting school programs. The highlight of the evening was the enchanting luminary walk to the garden, where twinkling lights and live music created a magical winter wonderland.

The Annual Luminary Event once again brought the ROES community together in celebration, creating lasting memories for all who attended. The joy and connection shared during this special night truly embody the spirit of the season.

River Oaks 3rd Grade Economics Market: A Decade of Giving Back

At River Oaks Elementary, learning comes alive in the 3rd grade Economics Unit! Every year, our young entrepreneurs dive into the world of business, discovering what it takes to run a successful venture while making their community better. This hands-on experience culminates in the 3rd Grade Economics Market, where students put their knowledge to the test by creating and selling products for a cause close to their hearts.

A Tradition of Generosity
This year marks a decade of impact for the Entrepreneur Market, a project that has raised thousands of dollars for meaningful causes. Since 2013, the market has been more than a learning opportunity—it's been a way for students to give back. Each year, students select a cause, design products, and invite the entire school to shop, with all profits donated to their chosen organization.

Highlights from 10 Years of Giving:

  • 2013-2014 … Funds for a beloved ROES student battling cancer
  • 2014-2015 … Hygiene/food kits for the homeless
  • 2015-2016 … Installed Buddy Benches to promote kindness and inclusion on ROES playgrounds and at a local children’s home
  • 2016-2017 … Pflugerville Animal Shelter
  • 2017-2018 … The Texas Homeless Network to meet the needs of the many homeless people around us (due to fires, floods, economic hardship, etc.)
  • 2018-2019 … The Rio Valley Relief Project helping children in families seeking asylum from Central America
  • 2019-2020 …  Provided relief for our custodian during a challenging time
  • 2022-2023 …  Helping Hands Children's Home
  • 2023-2024 …  Austin Pets Alive
  • 2024-2025 …  Austin Pets Alive - giving to animals spoke to the students the most again this year

From helping local shelters to supporting children and families in need, our students have made a lasting impact.

A Lesson in Leadership
This project teaches more than economics—it instills values of empathy, teamwork, and community service. By the time Market Day rolls around, students aren't just learning about supply and demand; they’re learning what it means to make a difference.

Here’s to celebrating 10 years of entrepreneurial spirit and generosity at River Oaks Elementary. We’re excited to see how our students continue to shape the future, one great idea—and one meaningful cause—at a time!

ROES Students Explore Interests in Friday Morning Enrichment Clubs!

Each Friday morning, ROES comes alive with excitement as students gather for enrichment clubs tailored to their unique interests. This year’s lineup of clubs offers something for everyone, allowing students to explore new skills, hobbies, and passions in a fun, supportive environment.

From the calming practice of yoga and mindful movement to the strategic challenges of chess, students can dive into activities that stimulate both the mind and body. Language enthusiasts can immerse themselves in Spanish and American Sign Language (ASL) clubs, while budding artists express their creativity through drawing, suncatcher crafting, knitting, and embroidery. Our tech-savvy students are designing with Canva and developing their typing accuracy and speed. For those who love to read and discuss books, the book club provides an ideal space.  Problem solving and perseverance are challenged in board games, puzzles and cursive handwriting clubs as well.

Each club is guided by dedicated staff and volunteers who are committed to nurturing students’ interests. These Friday morning enrichment clubs are designed not only to expand students' horizons but also to foster a sense of community and curiosity that enriches their school experience.

PEAS Program

PEAS Brings Hands-On Science to River Oaks Elementary

River Oaks Elementary is excited to welcome PEAS (Partners for Education, Agriculture, and Sustainability) to our campus to bring science lessons to life in the garden for our Kindergarten students!

PEAS, a nonprofit organization based in Austin, TX, is dedicated to fostering joyful connections with the natural world through outdoor learning and edible education. Since its founding in 2011, PEAS has grown into a vibrant educational resource, partnering with schools to create meaningful, hands-on learning experiences.

This program allows our youngest learners to explore science concepts right in our school garden. With guidance from PEAS' trained specialists, Kindergarteners will dig into interactive lessons that blend science, sustainability, and social-emotional learning. These outdoor sessions not only enhance academic skills but also encourage curiosity, teamwork, and a love for nature.

As one of 32 schools in the Austin area benefiting from PEAS’ programs, River Oaks is thrilled to provide our students with this unique opportunity. Stay tuned as our little scientists embark on their garden adventures!
